The Essay

Nothing beautiful needs to stay beautiful forever.

All the lovely things that were too tired to be perfect.

All the lovely things that were too tired to be perfect.

In this generated illustration, a slice has been taken from a two-tier white cake. Crumbs, a fork, two coupe glasses and a loose ribbon remain on rumpled linen. Nothing here documents a real wedding or tells us who left first. The image offers a pause in the imagined morning: a carefully arranged object has been used, and can now be something less complete.

Editorial note: Edition Fifteen is an original editorial work of fiction. Elin, Theo, Gianna Reed and every other person and conversation are imagined, not interview subjects. Generated images are illustrations, not documentary photographs. This manuscript is a new editorial revision of the original issue.
